Blackberry 8500 series can be configured as a USB modem so that you can access the internet using you notebook or pc. Most of today's phone can do that. It's called tethering.
Well, to do tethering using Blackberry 8520 or Blackberry 8530, here's the step.
1. Install BlackBerry Desktop Software 4.1 to 5.0 on your computer.
2. Set up the Internet access point name (APN)
3. Configure Dial-up Networking (DUN)
4. Connect to the Internet using DUN.
First
Install BlackBerry Desktop Software.
The installation will install necessary software and all modem driver and USB port driver required. When the BlackBerry Desktop Software installation completed, proceed to the next step when completed.
Next
Set up an Internet access point name (APN)
1. On the computer, click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
2. Double-click Phone and Modem Options.
3. In the Phone and Modem Options window, click the Modems tab.
4. Select Standard Modem and click Properties.
5. Click Change Settings.
6. In the Standard Modem Properties window, click the Advanced tab.
7. In the Extra initialization commands field, type the following:
+cgdcont=1,"IP",""
8. Click OK.
9. In the Phone and Modem Options window, click OK
Next
Configure Dial up Networking
Windows Vista or Windows 7
1. Click Start.
2. Select Connect To.
3. Click Set up a connection or network.
4. Click Set up a dial up connection.
5. Type *99# (for EDGE or GPRS) OR *98# (for UMTS) or #777 (for CDMA or EVDO) in the Phone number field, and click Next.
6. Type the user name and password provided by your wireless service provider.
7. Name the connection.
8. Click Dialing Rules.
9. Select the modem configured and then click OK.
10. Select Connect to establish an Internet connection.
Windows XP
1. Click Start > Settings > Control Panel > Network Connections.
2. Click Create a New Connection. The New Connection Wizard opens.
3. Click Next.
4. Select the Connect to the Internet option, and then click Next.
5. Select Set up my connection manually, and then click Next.
6. Select Connect using a dial-up modem, and then click Next.
7. In the Select a Device screen, select the Modem - Standard Modem check box, and then click Next.
8. In the ISP Name field, type a name for the desired connection, and then click Next.
9. Type *99# (for EDGE or GPRS) OR *98# (for UMTS) or #777 (for CDMA or EVDO) in the Phone number field, and click Next.
10. Indicate which users will have access to the connection, and then click Next.
11. Type the user name and password provided by your wireless service provider.
12. Click Finish.
13. In the Connect window, click Properties.
14. In the Properties window, verify that Modem - Standard Modem appears beneath the Connect using heading, and then click Configure.
15. In the Modem Configuration window, clear the Enable hardware flow control check box and make sure that none of the other check boxes are selected.
16. Click OK.
17. In the Properties window, click OK.
Windows 2000
1. Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
2. Double-click Network and Dial-up Connections.
3. Double-click Make New Connection. The Network Connection Wizard opens.
4. Click Next.
5. Choose Dial-up to private network, and then click Next.
6. Type *99# (for EDGE or GPRS) OR *98# (for UMTS) or #777 (for CDMA or EVDO) in the Phone number field, and click Next.
7. Indicate which users will have access to the connection, and then click Next.
8. Type a name for your connection, and then click Finish.
9. In the Connect window, click Properties.
10. In the Properties window, verify that Modem - Standard Modem is selected, and then click Configure.
11. In the Modem Configuration window, clear the Enable hardware flow control check box and make sure that none of the other check boxes are selected.
12. Click OK.
13. In the Properties window, click OK.

Connect to the Internet using Dial Up Networking.
1. Connect the BlackBerry smartphone to the computer.
2. Open the BlackBerry Desktop Manager, and make sure your phone recognized by BlackBerry Desktop Manager.
3. Click Start > Settings > Control Panel > Network Connections >.
4. Click Dial.
Important notes*
- The BlackBerry Desktop Manager must be running.
- Make sure there's no active connection to the internet from Blackberry browser or any other third party software.
